Chief minister Naveen Patnaik pays tribute to former President APJ Abdul Kalam on his death anniversary in Bhubaneswar on Thursday.
The state government, on Kalam's second death anniversary, officially notified the Outer Wheeler Island in Bhadrak district as the APJ Kalam Island. The integrated missile testing range is located on this island. Naveen had announced the decision to rename the island in 2015.
The government came up with the gazette notification after receiving a no-objection certificate from the Union home ministry.
Naveen paid floral tributes to a portrait of Kalam and recollected his "long association" with the state. A copy of the notification was handed over to him by revenue minister Maheswar Mohanty. "This is a token gift to him on his death anniversary," said Mohanty.
