Jajpur: Binjharpur police have booked a teacher of a government-run primary school for physically assaulting her octogenarian in-laws.
The victims, Giridhari Behera, 89, and his wife Sundari, 85, residents of Dihakula under Aaunri panchayat in Binjharpur police limits in the district, lodged a police complaint in this regard on Sunday night, following which an FIR was registered against their daughter-in-law.
The woman, identified as Tilotama Nayak, works as a teacher at Damodarpur Nodal Upper Primary School under Binjharpur block.
The victims have alleged in the police complaint that their younger daughter-in-law, who works as a teacher in a local school, misbehaved with them without any provocation and assaulted them physically over petty issues.
"The octogenarian couple came to the police station and lodged a complaint against Nayak on Sunday night. The couple were staying with their son and daughter-in-law to get better maintenance as both of them are employed," said Binjharpur police station inspector-in-charge Suchitra Birjya Das.
Das said that as their son worked outside, they lived with their daughter-in-law.
"Taking advantage of their son's absence, Nayak used to misbehave with the couple," said Das. She used to allegedly thrash the old couple over petty issues, he said.
According to the complaint, Nayak started an argument with Giridhari over lunch on Sunday.
Seeing her arguing with him, Sundari intervened and protested.
Nayak rebuked the couple in filthy language, and later in a fit of rage, she allegedly beat them with a stick, the complaint stated.
"It is too much. We cannot tolerate such behaviour," they said in the police complaint. The couple also said they wanted their daughter-in-law to be punished under the law.
Going with the statement of the victims, the police have registered the FIR against Nayak under various sections of the Indian Penal Code and started an investigation into the case.
