Cuttack, June 9: The city’s Link Road connecting Badambadi bus terminus with NH-5 at Madhupatna is facing the burden of increasing congestion due to unchecked parking of buses.

Illegal parking of buses along the Link Road has been adding to the chaos as more than a thousand buses from several parts of the state move in and out of the Badambadi bus terminus everyday.

According to traffic officials, on any given day, around 40 buses are parked on the stretch. Besides, over a 100 buses are parked along the road at night.

Several stretches of the Link Road had been declared as no parking zones. But the problem of illegal parking has persisted.

“We expect minimum infrastructure for parking of idle buses to come up soon on a vacant plot identified for the purpose at Gopalpur,” assistant commissioner of police (traffic) Pramod Kumar Rath told The Telegraph today.

The issue of persisting chaos on the Link Road had figured recently at a meeting of the high court-constituted traffic management committee for Cuttack city. The Committee is headed by the commissioner of police, Bhubaneswar-Cuttack.

“After deliberations, it was decided that a sub-committee would visit the area and suggest ways for development of minimum infrastructure for parking of idle buses, including entry and exit on the vacant land at Gopalpur,” a member of the committee said.

The sub-committee includes executive engineer (roads and buildings), Cuttack, regional transport officer, Cuttack, assistant commissioner of police (traffic), Cuttack, general manager, Odisha road transport corporation) and three advocates of the high court.

Official sources said vacant railway land at Gopalpur had been earmarked for development of a new bus stand.

Odisha State Road Transport Corporation (OSRTC) is expected to develop the land for the purpose after it is alienated in favour of the state commerce and transport department. “Industrial development Corporation of Odisha (Idco) has engaged Ms Rites Ltd as the consultant agency to prepare the master plan and architectural design for development of a bus terminus at Gopalpur,” an OSRTC official said.

The traffic management committee had taken up the increasing problem of illegal parking of buses along Link Road following direction of the high court on a PIL seeking intervention against the menace.

Chaotic parking along the road is causing inconvenience to passengers, the public interest litigation contended.
