Bhubaneswar, May 2: Police today suggested to the Lingaraj temple administration to introduce identity cards for servitors. The suggestion was made following a security review of the 11th century shrine today.

The police also decided to beef up security in and around the temple to thwart any possible attack.

The visit of two extremists of Indian Mujahideen to Bhubaneswar, Puri and Cuttack in January has raised concerns about the security of temples and other important establishments in the twin cities and the holy town. Besides, a video clip of an aerial view of the temple was recently circulated on social networking websites, prompting the administration to go for a thorough security review of the temple.

The police today posted a sub-inspector at the temple outpost to manage security affairs. It also decided to install one additional door frame metal detector at the entry point of the temple.

At present, one door frame metal detector is being used at the entrance. The police would also provide adequate hand-held metal detectors to frisk visitors.

At present, the security affairs of the temple is being managed by six constables posted at the outpost, one section of Odisha State Armed Police deployed at the main entrance and two more at the other entry and exit points of the temple. Six female home guards are also there.

“Additional female police personnel would be deployed to frisk female devotees. Besides, closed-circuit cameras would be installed to keep a tab on the movement of people around the temple,” said police commissioner R.P. Sharma.
