Bhubnaeswar: Police on Thursday interrogated the husband of the 21-year-old dancer who allegedly committed suicide at her rented accommodation in Nages-wartangi on Wednesday afternoon.

The body Kaushalya Mallik, who has featured in around a dozen Odia music videos, was found hanging from the ceiling fan of the room.

The police said that the deceased, a native of Balasore, had married Lakshmi Narayan Behera of the same district in December last year.

"However, Lakshmi Narayan's family was against the marriage. They neither approved of their marriage nor allowed her into their house because of which the deceased used to be under stress," said a police officer.

Kaushalya and her husband used to work at same place in Bhubaneswar. But, Lakshmi Narayan had recently moved to Balasore to work with a private company there.

"Lakshmi Narayan used to come down to Nageswartangi every Tuesday. But he did not come this Tuesday for some reason, which led to an argument between them," said the officer.

On Wednesday, a friend of Kaushalya had called police sensing something wrong when Kaushalya did not open the door despite repeated knocks. The police broke open the door and found Kaushalya hanging from the ceiling fan.

However, the police also came across another entrance to the room which was not locked.

Prima facie, the police suspect it to be a case of suicide. But, Kaushalya's family members have complained of mental torture by Lakshmi Narayan and his family.

"She was under stress for the last one week as both of them had a fight over some issue. Her husband used to stay away from her after his family disapproved of the marriage," alleged a family relative.

Deputy commissioner of police Anup Kumar Sahoo said that they were waiting for the post-mortem report to ascertain the exact cause of death.

"We have also found the mobile phone of the deceased from the room. We are going through her mobile call details and probing every possible angle," said Sahoo.
