Cuttack, Nov. 3: Police have redesigned a speed breaker near Mini Park at Khannagar as the faulty hump had made the stretch accident-prone.

While reconstructing the speed breaker, the cops saw to it that the specifications ensured a safe ride for commuters on the busy Ring Road.

The modification comes after The Telegraph had on October 14 published a report titled “Death on Cuttack’s accident stretch”, highlighting the problems faced by commuters in sighting the speed breaker on that particular stretch. Two motorists were killed here in an accident on October 12.

“According to the decision of the traffic management committee, the speed breaker near Khannagar crossing has been redesigned in accordance with the guidelines specified by the Indian Road Congress,” said assistant commissioner of police (traffic) P.K. Dalai.

Dalai said officials of the irrigation department had redesigned the speed breaker near Khannagar Park. The redesigned speed breaker is 3.7 metres in length, four inch in height and has white marking for easy visibility.

“The hump was just like a stumbling block and it was creating problems for commuters especially at night. We are happy that that the cops have resolved the problem by reducing the steep slope of the speed breaker,” said Dilip Sahu, a regular commuter. He said the police should also take appropriate measures to ensure road discipline and rectify such problems immediately for the safety of commuters at other places also.

Traffic officials said that as per the guidelines of the Indian Road Congress, proper signage about speed breakers at a distance of 40 metres have also been installed on both sides of the road at Khannagar.

Traffic officials said the speed breaker near Sunshine Field had been constructed as per the guidelines of the Indian Road Congress.

“We have already circulated the guidelines to various departments including irrigation, public works department and Cuttack Municipal Corporation to follow the rules while constructing speed breakers,” Dalai said.

“A lot of commuters are also facing a torrid time negotiating the sharp turn near Khannagar Park. The traffic officials should also install proper solar cat eye reflectors for easy navigation and visibility, especially at night,” said Aditya Das, another commuter.
