Bhubaneswar: The state government's stand about not receiving adequate assistance for disaster management from the Centre has been vindicated.
Disaster management minister Maheswar Mohanty said in Assembly on Monday that the state had not got a pie of the Rs 777 crore aid it had asked from the Centre after cyclone Hudhud had hit the state in 2014.
"We had sought a Central assistance of Rs 777.12 crore from the National Disaster Response Fund (NDRF) for relief and restoration work in the areas devastated by Hudhud. But we have not received a single pie from the Centre," Mohanty said.
BJD legislators Debasis Nayak and Dibyashankar Mishra and Independent MLA Umakanta Samantaray lambasted the Centre for its step-motherly attitude.
"Prime Minister Narendra Modi had visited Visakhapatnam, which is located close to Odisha and had announced an interim relief of Rs 1,000 crore for Andhra Pradesh. But he did not bother to visit the cyclone-hit areas of Odisha nor did he release any assistance for the victims. It is a cruel joke for the victims of Odisha", said Nayak.
On the other hand, Odisha received pat from United Nations for evacuating nine lakh people from vulnerable areas to safer places, Nayak said.
Mohanty said the state government had sought central assistance of Rs 374.31 crore for repair of roads and bridges, Rs 85.65 crore for repair of rural/urban drinking water supply system, Rs 80.10 crore for irrigation works, Rs 37.95 crore to rebuild damaged primary school buildings, Rs 44.6 crore for destroyed community assets and Rs 23.77 crore for providing agriculture input subsidy to farmers.
