Berhampur: Police suspect the third-year diploma in medical laboratory technology student was attacked by her husband with nitric acid at MKCG Medical College and Hospital on Thursday.
"We suspect he had used nitric acid. We have sent skin and other samples to the forensic science laboratory for further confirmation," said Berhampur sub-divisional police officer Santanu Kumar Das and added that the police were in the process of finding out from where he got the acid.
"We are trying to nab the husband Niranjan, who is now on the run. We are going through CCTV footage to nab the accused and the scientific team is trying to derive more clues. We have registered a case against the husband after the family members of the victim lodged a complaint. A separate case has been registered on the earlier family dispute," he said. The executive magistrate recorded the victim's statement at SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack on Friday.
On Thursday, the victim's estranged husband has thro-wn acid on her on MKCG campus. The woman, who suffered burns, was initially treated at the hospital before being shifted the SCB hospital in Cuttack for better treatment.
Gundicha Samantasinhara, secretary of District Legal Services Authority, Ganjam, said the organisation would provide immediate compensation of Rs 1 lakh to the victim under the Odisha Victim Compensation Scheme as directed by the Supreme Court of India. "We will provide the compensation amou-nt within 15 days," he said.
"The victim was being treated in a non-air conditioned ward at MKCG. The principal and the superintendent of MKCG, who immediately discussed the course of treatment with a team of senior doctors, decided to shift the victim to SCB after three hours of first aid treatment. We were able to shift the victim to SCB within four hours in an ambulance," said Samantasinhara.
