The fourth convocation ceremony of S’O’A University was held on May 13. Former chairman of space commission and Indian Space Research Organisation (Isro) K. Radhakrishnan took part in the ceremony. Radhakrishnan, who is also the former secretary in the department of space, said India’s Mangalyaan mission was executed with commendable precision and the spacecraft has been sending data from Mars to the Indian Deep Space Earth Station near Bangalore.

The fourth convocation ceremony of S’O’A University was held on May 13. Former chairman of space commission and Indian Space Research Organisation (Isro) K. Radhakrishnan took part in the ceremony. Radhakrishnan, who is also the former secretary in the department of space, said India’s Mangalyaan mission was executed with commendable precision and the spacecraft has been sending data from Mars to the Indian Deep Space Earth Station near Bangalore. Secretary and director general of Indian Council of Agricultural Research Trilochan Mohapatra also addressed the gathering. About 121 scholars were presented with PhD degrees, 92 students were presented gold medals for academic excellence and seven students received the Chancellor’s gold medal for all-round performance.

Nursing day

Kalinga Nursing School and Kalinga Hospital Limited recently celebrated the 197th International Nursing Day on the birth anniversary of Florence Nightingale on the institute premises. The capping ceremony of 56 students was held followed by the oath-taking ceremony in presence of dignitaries from the medical field in the state. The school magazine Kalinga Avaa was also unveiled on the occasion. Students of Sum Nursing College also took part in the oath-taking ceremony. Students lit candles before the portrait of Florence Nightingale. The ceremony marked the beginning of Rhythm, the two-day annual function of the college. 

Science workshop

A national workshop on Nuclear Sciences and Applications of Radioisotopes was conducted at KIIT University on May 15. The Indian Association of Nuclear Chemists and Allied Scientists (IANCAS) and the varsity jointly organised the five-day programme. About 100 faculty members, research scholars from various institutions and scientists from Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC) took part in the workshop. 

The objective of the workshop was to create awareness about the benefits of nuclear energy and applications of radioisotopes in science, technology, agriculture and health care among the academic community. The participants took practical lessons related to handling, detection, measurements and applications of radioisotopes. 

The workshop provided a forum for mutual interaction among faculty, research scholars and scientists from BARC.

Director honoured 

Biju Pattnaik Film and Television Institute of Odisha in Cuttack felicitated director Shibu Prusty on May 11. Prusty, who is a former student of the institute, directed The Lord of the Universe that won the best cultural film award at the 64th National Film Awards this year. The film was also screened on the occasion, which was followed by a discussion with the students. The students asked lots of questions regarding filmmaking and ways to make a mark in the industry.  

Skill development

A 10-day soft skill development programme was held at the BJB Autonomous College. Singers Adyasha Ray and Goutam Giri enthralled the audience with their performances at the event. Librarian of the college Manoj Kumar Das, who is also a singer, sang some well known Odia songs. Various faculty members from the college and scholars from outside addressed the students on soft skills and communication skills. Each day began with a lecture by a resource person followed by a brainstorming session with the students. The programme is held every year for the skill development of students. Principal of the college Prof. Mohd Nawaz Hassan presented certificates to the successful students at the programme.
