Bhubaneswar, July 9: The Centre is considering Odisha government’s proposal to increase the number of MBBS seats to 250 each in the three government-run medical colleges.

This was informed by Union health secretary P.K. Pradhan at a meeting with chief secretary Bijay Patnaik today.

At present, the three government medical colleges —SCB Medical College at Cuttack, MKCG Medical College in Berhampur and VSS Medical College in Burla — have 150 seats each.

Pradhan said the ministry was thinking of increasing the number of MBBS seats in all government and private medical colleges across the country from 45,000 to 80,000.

The Odisha government has sought the Centre’s assistance to the tune of Rs 375 crore for the infrastructure development in three government medical colleges to increase the intake capacity for MBBS courses.
