Cuttack, June 7: The women’s rowing team, which won a gold and silver medal in the recently concluded 14th sub-junior National Rowing Championship, arrived to a rousing reception at the Cuttack railway station here today.

Manjulata Khair and Sanjukta Dung Dung bagged the gold in the coxless pair event while N. Monica Devi won silver in the singles scull event at this national event held in Calcutta from May 30 to June 6.

“We are happy that our hard work helped us fetch the medals for our state. This win is all the more special since we were successful in beating tough opponents in the entire championship,” said Majulata Khair.

A 15-member squad comprising 11 boys and four girls had participated in the championship. The girls’ team participated in three events — single scull, double scull and coxless pair. They managed to bag two medals for the state in the first and third categories. Kasturi Dash and N. Monica Devi had made it to the quarterfinals in the double scull event.

On the other hand, the boys’ team failed to make their mark.

“We could have performed much better if we had participated with the full team, including the senior players, in the championship. However, taking into account the performance of the new players in the entire tournament, it is a good achievement for the state. We hope that our medal tally would go up by the next championship,” said coach Jose Jacob.
