Bhubaneswar: A cover of the Padmaavat song Ghoomar by group of youngsters from the city is taking the Internet by storm.

Odissi danseuse Pallavi Das's cover, an Odisha folk dance version from the controversial film, has garnered appreciation from people on Twitter and YouTube. The dance was performed by students of Guru Pankaj Udra Sanskruti Academy.

In the video, men and women are seen dancing to the song at various locations in and around Chilika. An initiative by Guru Pankaj Udra Sanskruti Academy, the aim is to take the historical traditions of Odisha to a global audience.

"The tourists sites of Odisha is a huge attraction for many. Also, a number of cover songs of the song has been released and have become popular. We thought of giving an Odia touch to the song and in the process popularise the heritage of the state," said Pallavi Das, the granddaughter of legendary Odissi Guru Pankaj Charan Das.

In 2017, she had choreographed an Odissi piece on the theme song of Game of Thrones series, which was shot on the Mukteswar Temple premises.

The latest one is a combination of Sambalpuri folk dance and Chhau dance form.

She said the composition was formally made a month ago. "We shot the video in a day but the process was really exhausting as we had to ensure not to hurt the sentiments of anyone," she said.

Talking about her upcoming project, Pallavi said: "My grandfather's 99 birth anniversary is coming up and I plan to create a music video as a tribute to the Odissi legend."

Earlier, another group has recreated the song Shape of You with Odissi. A group of five dancers were seen dancing at various historical sites in Bhubaneswar in it. It was an initiative by Detour Odisha, a tourism start-up.
