Berhampur: Manoj Kumar Maharana, 24, of Bhabarada village under Polsara block of Ganjam district has created three records in oral gymnastics.

Manoj, who now eyes entry into the Guinness World Records, on Wednesday stuffed 533 straws - each one with a minimum diameter of 0.64cm - into his mouth to surpass the record of Guinness Rishi from Mumbai. Guinness had created a record of holding 496 straws in his mouth on the Guinness World Records set Ab India Todega in Mumbai in 2012. Rishi had all his teeth removed in order to cram more straws in his mouth. But, Manoj did it with all his teeth intact.

Manoj also stuffed 40 burning candles - each 9 inches long and a diameter of 1.3cm - into his mouth at a time. The earlier Guinness World Record holder in this category was Dinesh Shivnath Upadhyaya of Mumbai, who had stuffed 37 burning candles of this size in February.

Manoj also rounded a 6.5-cm-long toothpick at 360 degrees in his mouth with the help of tongue for 42 times in a minute. The earlier record in this category was 32 times a minute by Upadhyaya, who had done it last year.

"Manoj achieved all these three records with clean finishing," said adjudicator and director of the All India Radio (Berhampur) Hrushikesh Panigrahi. "Gymnastics plays a pivotal role in the traditional art and culture, including Radha Prema Leela, Prahallad Natak and others, of Ganjam district. Manoj has good control over the oral gymnastics," Hrushikesh said.

Last year, Manoj had created Guinness World Records for most straws stuffed in the mouth (hands off), by cramming 459. Prior to him, the record holder in the hands off category was Simon Elmore of London, who had done it in 2009. To break the record, Manoj had to ensure that the straws were fully stuffed in his mouth and stayed there for at least 20 seconds without even one falling off at that time.

According to the Guinness World Records website, the turning point was when Manoj heard about the previous record holder, Simon Elmore, and aimed to break it last year.

Manoj, a postgraduate in mathematics from Berhampur University, demonstrated this feats in Venus Competition Point at Anant Nagar in Berhampur amid wide applause on Wednesday.
