Bhubaneswar, June 13: In a suspected gang-rape reminiscent of the 2012 Nirbhaya incident in Delhi, a 47-year-old widow was found dead with handle of a griddle thrust into her private parts last night at Balikhamba in Dhenkanal district, 160km away from here.  

Police have detained two persons on the basis of the statement of the victim’s 12-year-old son, who was sleeping outside the house. The police said the victim’s son had noticed two men coming out of their house around midnight. When he went into the kitchen, where his mother was sleeping, he found her dead. 

The woman has three sons and two of them work as daily wagers in other districts. The police said the woman had injuries on other body parts, which seemed to have been caused by some blunt object. 

“The victim’s son, who stays in hostel, had come home a few days ago. His mother was sleeping in the kitchen and had kept the door of the house open. The boy told us that he had seen two men coming out of the house at midnight. We have detained both of them and are interrogating them further,” said superintendent of police, Dhenkanal, Basanta Kumar Panigrahi.
