COLLEGE CAMPUS
Alma Fiesta of IIT Bhubaneswar, one of the most popular college festivals of the country, will now be available on Android phones. The recently launched mobile application on the festival gives users an insight into the journey of the festival, its events and information about the upcoming events. The festival is organised every year in the second week of January. In 2010, the festival was organised for the first time and chief minister Naveen Patnaik was a guest at the event. Alma Fiesta is organised by the students and student bodies handle the sponsorship, publicity and management of the event.
Alumni event
The alumni association of Odisha Engineering College’s 1991 batch is set to celebrate its silver jubilee on December 25. More than150 alumni from across the country and abroad will take part with their families. The event will be celebrated on the campus with technical education minister Sanjay Das Burma the chief guest. The event will promote academic excellence and guide the present batch on career development. A cultural program will also be organised.
Moral lesson
The philosophy department of BJB College, Bhubaneswar, organised a national lecture titled “Why should I be moral?” on its campus. Manoranjan Panigrahi, a state government bureaucrat, inaugurated the event. During the lecture, theoreticians, researchers, and students discussed themes of ethics, moral education and society. It covered topics ranginf from moral motivation, moral development, moral education, and moral theory.
Conclave
A conclave on sustainable development goals and climate change was hosted recently at the Institute of Business and Computer Studies at SOA University. Addressing the students, environmental scientist and the former chairman of the Odisha State Pollution Control Board M.C. Dash said climate change was a reality and was happening because of human activities. Students discussed the importance of green technology to ensure sustainable development and exhaustible resources. The aim was to create awareness among teachers and students about climate change and the need to include it in the education system.
Quiz champs
The 5th state-level quiz competition, Crossfire, organised by Srusti Academy of Management, Bhubaneswar, was held on December 10. Around 164 students of various Plus-Three and Plus-Two colleges took part in the event. Amit Tripathy, a popular quizmaster from Odisha, hosted the event. Ananda Mishra, member of Google Business Group, gave ideas to the students to create their own start-up companies by using new applications launched by Google. K. Rakesh and Papun Kumar Nayak of Deba Ray College, Nayapalli, won in the senior category, while Pritiman Mishra and Ayanshu Debabrata of Ravenshaw Junior College, Cuttack, won in the junior category.
Bullseye
An intercollege archery competition among Plus-Two students was hosted in Baripada recently. Mithun Barban of Sudargarh won the boys’ category, while Golap Nayak from Sundargarh won the girls’ event. The archery trainers of various colleges were present on the concluding day and they spoke on various techniques used in the field.
Students’ rally
The postgraduate department of political science and public administration of Sambalpur University observed the International Human Rights Day on the varsity premises on December 10. An awareness rally was organised during the occasion, in which students and teachers of the department took part. Former vice-chancellor of Berhampur University Deepak Behera flagged off the rally. Debate, essay writing and poster making competitions were also organised for the students during the occasion.
Rights seminar
A seminar titled “Stand Up For Human Rights Today” was organised by the NSS wing of the Institute of Media Studies on the occasion of Human Rights Day in their seminar hall on November 10. Students spoke on human rights of various sections of society and how one should never compromise on it by allowing the state or individuals to abuse it. Rights activist Biswapriya Kanungo talked about cases of human rights abuse during the seminar. Many students presented papers during the seminar.
Blood donation
A blood donation camp was organised at Ekamra College, Bhubaneswar, recently, in which students, faculty members, staff of the institute and local residents took part. A total number of 52 units of blood were collected during the camp. The donors went through a series of medical checks, including blood pressure and haemoglobin tests before donating their blood. The officials from Odisha State Blood Bank motivated the donors with the objective of saving lives.
