Bhubaneswar, Aug. 21: Movie buffs in the city will be able to enjoy a special screening of select films by the Film Society of Bhubaneswar (FSB) this Thursday.
The screening will include an international film that had won a jury award at the Cannes Film Festival, followed by a documentary film on mystic poet Kabir and late classical singer Kumar Gandharv.
The first screening of the evening would be A Screaming Man — a 2010 film from Chad, an African country. The film is directed by Mahamat-Saleh Haroun, one of the pre-eminent film-makers from Africa working in contemporary world cinema, said Subash Das, a member of the society.
Adam, a former swimming champion in his 60s, is a pool attendant at a hotel in Chad. When the hotel is taken over by new Chinese owners, he is forced to give his job to his son Abdel.
He is left humiliated and resentful. It is also the time when the country is in the throes of civil war. Rebel forces attack the government while the authorities demand the population to contribute to the ‘war effort’ with money or volunteers old enough to fight.
The district chief constantly harasses Adam for his contribution. But Adam is penniless; he only has his son. In a moment of weakness, Adam makes a decision that he forever regrets. He signs up Abdel for the army.
“The father and son relationship is the main focus of the film’s story, but according to the director, it is relevant to modern day Chad. A Screaming Man has won critical acclaim in many major international film festivals. It also won the prestigious jury prize at Cannes 2010,” said Das.
The second film to be screened by FSB is Koi Sunta Hai — Someone is Listening: Journeys with Kumar and Kabir directed by well-known Indian director Shabnam Virmani. This film is a part of Virmani’s documentary film project on the poet and saint Kabir called Kabir Project.
The society members said last month the society had screened the documentary film Had Anhad- Bounded Boundless: Journey with Ram and Kabir produced in 2003. Following request from the film society members, the organisers decided to screen the companion piece Koi Sunta Hai.
Das said the screening of these two films is a part of the monthly screening of films organised by the FSB. The screening would be held at Jayadev Bhavan near Indira Gandhi Park on August 23.
