Bhubaneswar, Nov. 29: All eyes are set on the high-stake Umerkote bypoll where polling will take place tomorrow. Though the campaign ended yesterday, workers of the three major parties, the BJD, the Congress and the BJP are still trying their best to remain in touch with the voters.

Polling will take place between 8am and 4pm tomorrow. Around 1.65 lakh voters will decide the fate of the BJD’s Subas Gond, the BJP’s Dharmu Gond and the Congress’s Jatindra Gond.

To ensure a free and fair poll, elaborate security arrangements have been made in the constituency. Nabarangpur collector Sibabrata Das said: “Adequate police arrangements have been made to conduct a peaceful election. Voters should come without any fear and participate in the voting process.” Of the 167 booths, 62 booths have been identified as sensitive. As the constituency falls in the Maoist-infested belt, the Odisha police have sealed the border with Chhattisgarh. Jawans of the Special Operation Group (SOG), CRPF and India Reserve Battalion (IRB) have been deployed. The area has been divided into sectors.

In a petition to the Election Commission (EC), the BJD has alleged that the BJP and Congress leaders have violated the model code of conduct.

BJD youth wing president Sanjay Dasburma said: “The BJD has filed a petition before the EC today. After the campaign came to an end on Monday, all leaders coming from other places for campaign should have left the constituency. However, the BJP and Congress leaders stayed back.”

The BJP and the Congress rubbished the charges. Nabarangpur’s Congress MP Pradeep Majhi said: “The BJD have already violated the code of conduct several times. They are unnecessarily leveling charges against the Congress and the BJP.”

BJP senior leader Biswa Bhusana Harichandan said: “They are going through a phase of fear psychosis.”
