Cuttack, Aug. 5: The district administration today deputed one unit of National Disaster Response Force to Banki.

All officials have been asked to remain alert as nearly 12 lakh cusecs of floodwater is likely to pass through Mundali by tomorrow.

Additional district magistrate Laxmidhar Mohanty said: “According to the state government’s instruction, we have asked all the officials to remain alert for the next couple of days.”

“As there is a possibility of floodwaters to back flow in few areas at Banki, Tigiria and Athgarh, adequate measures are being taken to deal with the situation,” Mohanty said.

He, however, said there was no immediate flood threat, while the situation was being closely monitored in the district.

Cuttack district has received 339.1mm rainfall in the past 24 hours, while Narsinghpur and Badamba have received a highest rainfall of 88mm.

The overall flood situation at Tigiria registered a slight improvement even though floodwater was flowing on Chasahara road today.

There are reports of floodwater entering a few low-lying areas at Banki, including Suakhala and Bilipada villages. Sources said that nearly 2,000 people have been affected at the Tigiri and Banki areas in the district.

Similarly, the road communication between Khurda and Banki remained cut-off today.

“Floodwater so far has not entered any village at Banki, while adequate measures have been taken to deal with the situation,” said Banki sub-collector Basant Rout.

Rout said one team of the force had been stationed in the area, while 16 boats and four powerboats had been kept ready to carry out relief and rescue in case of emergency.

The floodwater of the Mahanadi has also entered a few low-lying areas, including Muda Sahi and Gatiroutpatna in Cuttack Sadar.
