Bhubaneswar, Aug. 17: One bogey of a Rajdhani Express, coming from Delhi, was severely damaged and another partially affected as a fire broke out while the train was standing on Platform IV of Bhubaneswar railway station. No one was, however, injured in the incident, sources said.
Three fire brigade vehicles took more than three hours to douse the fire. Luckily, there were no passengers in the train when it caught fire after around 15 minutes of arrival on the platform.
Kalyani Behera, a Railway Protection Force constable, who had arrived in the train from Bhadrak, said the incident took place after the train halted at the capital’s railway station. “I saw smoke coming out of the fourth compartment of AC three-tier coach. Soon, we informed the RPF office, which, in turn called the fire brigade,” said Behera.
Fire officer B.B. Das said preliminary investigation revealed that the fire was because of a short-circuit at a socket of the air-conditioner. “The short-circuit might have happened because of the rain that occurred after the train arrived,” said Das.
Station manager Kedar Nath Sahoo said that there was no disruption in train service because of this mishap. He also said that the same train would leave for New Delhi at 9am tomorrow without this bogey.
Sahoo said that an inquiry would be held to find out the cause of the fire. “The exact amount of loss caused by the fire will be clear soon,” the station manager said.
