Kendrapara, Dec. 22: A doctor removed the uterus of a 27-year-old woman during vaginal hysterectomy with pelvic floor repair procedure.
Rangalata Behera from Barasanga village is recovering at a private nursing home here and is said to be out of danger.
Rangalata's husband has lodged an FIR alleging medical negligence at Kendrapara town police station.
The incident comes three days after after doctors allegedly cut the intestine of a woman who was admitted for sterilisation at a government-run hospital.
"Even though there was no complication in her uterus, the doctor removed it yesterday. We were kept in the dark. With the uterus gone, she has lost the capacity to conceive again. By god's grace, we already have a daughter," Rangalata's husband Prasant Behera said.
"It was a harrowing ordeal. My wife wanted a boy child. I have lodged an FIR against the doctor," he said.
Dr Rashmikanta Patra, who removed the uterus of the woman, said: "She was suffering from prolapsed uterus disease. A prolapsed uterus increases risk of cancer. Damage to pelvic muscles and tissues during pregnancy and childbirth may also lead to prolapse. Women who have had more than one vaginal birth and postmenopausal women are at the highest risk. The woman has a seven-year-old daughter. To save her life, I removed her uterus.
"The husband of the woman has been misguided by some people and that is why he filed an FIR against me and alleged that I had been negligent in removing the uterus of his wife," Dr Patra said.
Kedarnath Sahoo, sub-divisional police officer Kendrapara said: "Acting on the FIR of woman's husband, the police have started investigation. On Thursday, the police interrogated the doctor who removed the uterus. We have also seized some documents from the private hospital."
"I have directed the chief district medical officer (CDMO) to submit a detailed report on the incident," said Muralidhar Mallick, Kendrapada district collector.
Dr Niranjan Swain, CDMO of Kendrapara, said: "We are investigating the case."
Instances of medical negligence both in government-run and private health institutes have made headlines several times in the recent past.
In the latest instance, doctors allegedly sliced the intestine of a woman who was admitted for a tubectomy at a government-run hospital. A newborn male baby died minutes after birth after he accidentally slipped from a doctor's grasp at the gynaecology and obstetrics ward of Kendrapara district headquarters hospital on December 9.
