Bhubaneswar, July 25: A slice of life from Australia and China will be served for film enthusiasts at a screening organised by Film Society of Bhubaneswar at Jayadev Bhavan on Friday.
Samson and Delilah, the first movie, is the debut feature of Australian filmmaker Warwick Thornton. The 2009 film has been hailed as a significant work in contemporary Australian cinema. It is the story of Samson and Delilah, two young people in an isolated community in the central Australian desert. When tragedy strikes, they leave home and embark on a journey of survival.
The film has won many international awards, including Golden Camera award for best first film at Cannes International Film Festival.
The second film, The Bird People in China, is also about an unusual journey. Made by contemporary Japanese filmmaker Mike Takashi, this movie is relevant to the current scenario in many countries.
A company official is sent from Tokyo to the Yun Nan province in China to make sure there is jade in a jade mine. The official finds himself accompanied by a member of an organised crime syndicate, as the mining company interested in the jade mine has borrowed money from the syndicate.
The travellers, apart from discovering the mine, find a world where people believe in being able to fly.
“Both films showcase struggles as well as the zeal for life. People here can relate to the subjects and also enjoy the brilliant techniques of direction and filmmaking,” said Jagat Basa, a member of the Film Society of Bhubaneswar.
