Bhubaneswar, June 16: Several farmer organisations in the state have threatened to stage protests against Madhya Pradesh chief minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, who will visit Bargarh district tomorrow.
The embattled BJP leader will be here to take part in the Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas programme to mark three years of the BJP-led NDA government at the Centre.
Chouhan has been facing flak in his own state following the killing of six agitating farmers in police firing at Mandsaur on June 6.
The Nav Nirman Krushak Sangathan, a leading farmers' organisation in Odisha, today staged a demonstration for two hours in protest against the killing of the farmers in Madhya Pradesh.
Sources said that farmers' protests against Chaurhan would have the tacit support of the BJD, which has been at loggerheads with the BJP over visits of Union ministers to the state. Two Union ministers - Radha Mohan Singh and Jual Oram - have recently faced egg attacks from BJD workers during their visits to the state. BJD has been protesting against NDA government's "neglect" of Odisha, ranging from special category status for the state to the Mahanadi dispute.
Today, the BJD gave a call to stage a district-level agitation on Monday over the Mahanadi and special category status issues.
The BJP today observed a bandh in Sundargarh, the Lok Sabha constituency of Oram, to protest against the egg attack on the ministers at Aul in Kendrapara district. Seven BJP workers were arrested in Aul. A BJP delegation, led by its state unit president Basant Panda, met the governor and Oram wrote a letter to Union home minister Rajnath Singh seeking his intervention. Oram said the Union home secretary has sought a report from the state government.
BJD spokesperson Pratap Deb denied the allegations that he had orchestrated the attack and said he was abroad when the incident occurred. "Workers from the BJD, BJP and Congress were involved in the egg attack and it was a spontaneous outburst against the NDA government," he added.
BJD's youth wing president Amaresh Patri and student wing chief Rana Pratap Patra said demonstrations would be staged in all the 30 district headquarters and also at Bhubaneswar and Rourkela.<>The Centre's apathetic attitude towards Odisha had become evident with Union minister V.K. Singh, during his visit to the state on June 13, saying that the state did not need special category state status, said the BJD leaders.
They also pointed out the statement of Chhattisgarh's minister Amar Agrawal saying that his state had every right to use Mahanadi river water.
