Plantation drive
Cherry Blossoms, Bhubaneswar, organised an awareness rally to promote Van Mahotsav on July 2. Over 100 students joined the rally held at Patia. It saw the participation of a large number of nature enthusiasts, including students, teachers and volunteers. A cheering crowd of schoolchildren welcomed the students. The students, along with the volunteers, took part in a mass tree plantation drive afterwards. About 200 plants were sowed in a field at Chandrasekharpur. The purpose was to sensitise people about the significance of impacts on the environment.
Foundation day
The 11th foundation day of KIIT International School, Bhubaneswar, was held on July 2. Faizan Sheikh, the youngest Indian motivational speaker, addressed the students, where he said one should have sufficient energy and self-confidence to achieve the highest level of success in one’s life. The school’s Student Cabinet for 2017 took oath while students excelling in different fields were awarded on the occasion.
School suffers
The Salepali Project Upper Primary School in Balangir lacks necessary facilities despite the state government’s claims of providing adequate infrastructure for imparting quality education at primary schools. The school has only four classrooms for eight classes - I to VIII. A total of 190 students, including 50 from the Kamakshyee Nagar Primary School, study at the school. The Salepali Anganwadi children are also taught and served food here. It has no boundary wall or electricity connection. Local residents have demanded better amenities at the school.
Exposure trip
Malkangiri collector K. Sudharshan Chakravarthy recently flagged off a special bus carrying school students and five officials on an exposure visit to Bhubaneswar. An official said the students, who had secured first and second positions in the annual athletics meet in various events conducted by the schools, were selected for the visit for exposure during the Asian Athletics Championship. The students witnessed the inaugural function of the championship and the sporting events on Thursday. The students were excited to see some of the famous Indian and foreign players in action.
Children’s fest
A state-level children’s festival was held in Ganjam recently. Child artistes of Odisha Sangeet Parishad, Nupoor, Gayatri Kala Parishad Kendra, Kala Bikash Kendra, Chhatrapur and Sanskuriti Bhawan enthralled visitors with their performances in traditional dance forms such as Odissi, chhanda, champu, mahari and devadasi. The 11th edition of the event aimed at providing a platform for kids to display their talents for their artistic growth.

Investiture
Sainik School, Bhubaneswar, observed its investiture ceremony on July 4 with 37 cadets taking oath to shoulder different responsibilities for the new academic session on the occasion. Chief guest Lt General P.S. Jaggi, Gopalpur Army Air Defence College Commandant, urged the cadets to dream big and follow the path of truthfulness, honesty, punctuality, dedication, obedience and sincerity that the new generations were forgetting with each passing day. He also appreciated the efforts of the institution for serving the nation since 1962 as a nursery for officers of the armed forces.
