Bhubaneswar, April 21: The Shiksha Chetana Abhiyan ended today with the enrolment of an estimated five lakh students in government and government aided schools across the state.
The campaign was being organised by the school and mass education department in collaboration with the rural development department, the SC and ST development department and UNICEF.
“We already have figures from 11 districts that show admission of 3.6 lakh students. It is estimated that there have been over five lakh admissions,” said an officer of the school and mass education department. “Mayurbhanj district witnessed maximum admissions with a figure of over 44,600,” he added.
In another development, salary of at least 212 teachers has been withheld and two teachers have been suspended by the department for dereliction of duty in conducting the Shiksha Chetana Abhiyan as per the guidelines.
“Besides providing the schools with designed kits containing aid materials, posters and guidelines for the campaign activities for each day, the department had pressed into duty 60 senior officers to supervise and ensure smooth conduct of the drive as per instructions. Daily reports were being collected from all parts of the state,” the official said.
The community mobilisation and awareness creation campaign, which began on April 15, was being observed in almost 52,000 government and government-aided schools across the state.
