Cuttack, Nov. 11: Orissa High Court today gave strong indications that it would constitute a committee to restore normalcy in Ravenshaw University.

Tomorrow, the high court will take up two public interest litigations (PIL), seeking judicial intervention to resolve dispute over the East Hostel of Ravenshaw University, for analogous hearing.

The outcome of the PILs assumes significance as all academic activities continue to remain paralysed owing to students’ agitation.

Demanding a rollback in the decision to allot East Hostel to girl students, the male students have kept the main gates locked since October 28.

Two former student union presidents of Ravenshaw College — Akshaya Kumar Das (1971-72) and Chittaranjan Mohanty (1970-71) — filed the PIL on October 8.

The PIL, seeking direction to declare the ongoing agitation as “illegal” and “restore normalcy on the campus”, came up for hearing today before the two-judge bench of Chief Justice V Gopal Gowda and Justice B.N. Mohapatra.

During the course of hearing, it was pointed out that another PIL of similar nature had been filed but was yet to be listed for hearing.

Taking note of it, the bench adjourned the hearing till tomorrow to take up both petitions for analogous hearing. Subendu Mohanty, a former student of Ravenshaw, filed the other PIL on September 29. The petition has sought direction for accommodating the 35 former boarders of the hostel and 62 first-year students, who have already paid the hostel admission fees, after completion of the renovation work of East Hostel.

Ravenshaw authorities have expressed concern over the adverse impact of the ongoing agitation on the functioning of the university.

“The faculty members and staff are not being allowed to enter the campus. This has resulted in complete breakdown of educational and other activities of the institution,” registrar Smarapriya Mishra said.
