Bhubaneswar, May 30: An engineering student in Patia sustained grievous injuries after falling from the roof of a four-storeyed building while he was in an inebriated state in the wee hours today.
Twenty-two-year-old Rashmi Ranjan Swain, who has been admitted to a private hospital in the city in a critical condition, had thrown a birthday bash for his friends at Subhadra apartment in Patia that night.
A native of Jajpur, the second-year B.Tech student sustained multiple injuries when he fell from the roof of the building around 4am.
Police detained 10 of his friends and one of his teachers who were present when the incident took place.
They are being interrogated at the Infocity police station. According to security guards at the apartment, they heard the sound of a heavy thing falling on the ground early in the morning.
When they rushed to the A block of the apartment, they found a youth lying on the ground in a pool of blood.
“We informed the secretary of the apartment who called the police. After the police came, the student was taken to hospital,” said Kailash Chandra Pati, a security guard.
Hospital sources said the boy sustained multiple injuries.
“He has suffered a severe head injury. His condition is very critical,” said hospital sources.
The police said 12 youths were celebrating Swain’s birthday and the party continued till around 3am.
“While others were sleeping in the room, Swain and his teacher, who was also staying in that house, went to sleep on the roof of the apartment. They were all drunk. Around 4.30am, the security guards spotted him lying on the ground,” said a police officer.
The police said preliminary investigation showed it to be a case of accident. The teacher, who was sleeping with him on the roof, was also unaware of Swain falling to the ground.
“We have informed his family members. We have not got any complaint of any foul play in this incident,” said a police officer.
In another development, other residents of the apartment building said these youths often created nuisance in the area.
They were almost always found drunk and quarrelling among themselves.
