Cuttack: It has been two years that gangster siblings, the Dhal Samant brothers, are languishing in jail, but the two continue to control the city's criminal network from behind the bars.

The duo are awaiting trials in several cases, including murder, attempt to murder, and tender fixing.

On Sunday, the cops claimed that Sushant Dhal Samant, who is lodged in Bhubaneswar's Jharpada jail, pulled strings to get a few criminals out on bail to settle scores on his behalf.

Cuttack deputy commissioner of police Akhileswar Singh said Sushant, the elder sibling, got notorious criminal Mrutunjaya Nayak alias Miku out on bail to kill Bijay Kumar Pal of Subhadrapur.

The cops nabbed Miku from near Barabati Stadium on Saturday and recovered two 9mm pistols, one made in the US and another in China, along with 29 rounds of bullets that he had buried in the courtyard of his IRC Village home in Bhubaneswar.

The police said Miku came in contact with Sushil while he was in lodged jail.

"Sushil helped Miku get bail on the condition that he would get rid of some people. Miku, who was released on February 20, fired at Pal on February 23," Singh said.

The cops had been on the lookout for Miku after Pal lodged a complaint.

On February 23, Miku went to Pal's house and called him to discuss sand auction.

When Pal came to the gate, Miku aimed the pistol at him. Pal fled, sensing danger, and the bullet hit a cupboard in his house. Miku fled with Sada Nayak, who was waiting outside on a motorcycle, the police said.

Sadar police have registered a case of attempt to murder and illegal possession and use of firearms against Miku.
