Cuttack, Jan. 16: Suryakant Bisoi, a doctor was arrested today in connection with the death of a minor boy, whose parents had alleged kidney theft by the authorities of a private nursing home during a surgery.

Bisoi was nabbed from College Square and had been booked under Section 304 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder) of the Indian Penal Code, said an official of Mangalabag police station.

Police sources said Bisoi had done a plastic surgery on a three-and-half-year-old boy at Jagannath Hospital and Research Centre in Professorpara on December 23 last year.

The boy, Srijit Das of Neherupalli, was admitted for surgery on his left hand. However, he died hours after the surgery.

His parents claimed that their son’s kidney had been removed during the operation, as there were incision marks on his abdomen.

Following the incident, Mangalabag police registered a case and officials of the district administration sealed off the concerned hospital.

The incident had sparked off tension as the family members and local residents of Neherupalli staged a demonstration in front of the district collector’s office on December 24, demanding compensation as well as arrest of the culprit.

Later, the police rubbished the allegations of kidney theft based on a post-mortem report that stated that both the kidneys of the boy were intact. The boy had died because of negligence on part of the doctors and other medical staff after the surgery, it said.
