Cuttack: A DNA test report of a couple and a baby girl on Tuesday confirmed that the baby was not swapped with another kid, contrary to allegations.
Prahlad Mohapatra had alleged that his wife Madhusmita had given birth to a baby boy at SCB Medical College and Hospital's obstetrics and gynaecology department on January 26, but the staff of the hospital's labour had "swapped" the boy with a girl child. But the DNA test report, which arrived on Tuesday, has confirmed that Prahlad and Madhusmita are the biological parents of the baby girl, said inspector in charge of Mangalabag police station Arun Kumar Swain.
The police were left with no option but to conduct a DNA Test on the kid and the parents after the hospital authorities maintained from the beginning that there was no question of any exchange of babies as January 26 was a holiday and Madhusmita was the only patient who had delivered a baby through Caesarean-operation on that day.
Besides, the closed-circuit television (CCTV) camera footage of the ward also did not hint at any baby swap.
Still, Mangalabag police had registered a case under Section 363 (kidnap) of Indian Penal Code and started its probe on February 2.
"We have sent the DNA test report to the hospital authorities, asking them to hand over the baby to the couple. The report will also be submitted for closure of the case in the Court of the Sub-Divisional Judicial Magistrate, Cuttack, which had granted the required permission for DNA test," Swain said.
The Child Welfare Committee (CWC), Cuttack, had registered a case and sought a report from the Mangalabag police after Madhusmita and Prahlad refused to accept the girl child. CWC member Pradip Patnaik told The Telegraph on Tuesday: "We took cognisance of the baby swapping allegation and registered the case. We will proceed according to legal provisions after receipt of a copy of the DNA test report."
Prahlad and Madhusmita are residents of Balichandrapur in Jajpur district.
