Cuttack, Sept. 14: Madhsudan Das dispensary is headed for transformation. One of the oldest medical centres of Cuttack, founded in 1937, it will be upgraded into a hospital shortly.

Keeping in view the dearth of a proper medical facility in the locality, the dispensary will be developed into a 30-bed hospital under the National Urban Health Mission, said Cuttack-Barabati legislator Debasish Samantray.

Following demands by local residents, senior Cuttack Municipal Corporation (CMC) officials visited the dispensary to take stock of the available infrastructure here today.

On an average 70 patients visit the dispensary every day. “It lies in a neglected state. We will ask the CMC officials to upgrade the dispensary into a full-fledged hospital,” said Samantray.

The construction of another building that was to be added to the dispensary began sometime ago. But it was stopped after a former councillor had lodged a complaint with the vigilance department regarding the shoddy nature of the work.

“It was an unfortunate incident and now efforts will be initiated to complete the construction of another building of the dispensary that could not completed earlier,” Samantray said.

Local residents have welcomed the decision to upgrade the existing dispensary into a hospital.

“It is high time that the dispensary is upgraded,” said Kartik Swain, a local resident. Swain alleged that patients from Kafla Bazar, Mansinghpatha, Deula Sahi and other localities depend on the Siddheshwar Sahi dispensary, which remains closed on most days during monsoon.

“Sewage water seeps into the dispensary during the monsoon. This causes severe inconvenience to the patients who visit the dispensary,” said Umakant Das, another local resident.

The medical staff face heavy odds and are made to move medical equipment and medicines to safer places when there is a heavy downpour. Senior officials of the corporation said that urgent steps would be taken for completing the construction of another building at the earliest.

“No adverse report has been given by the vigilance department this time as far as the quality of construction work is concerned. We will soon complete the pending civil works,” said CMC commissioner Gyana Ranjan Das. Das said that the corporation had earmarked a land for the construction of a hospital at CDA, while the conversion work of the Madhsudan Das dispensary into a hospital would be speeded up.
