Bhubaneswar, March 28: Pronouncing judgment in the murder case of DIG Jaswinder Singh, a Jeypore court today sentenced the main accused Sasananda Sarangi to ten years’ rigorous imprisonment and fine of Rs 20,000. In case of default in paying the fine, the accused will undergo imprisonment for another two years.

Additional sessions judge Suresh Kumar Patnaik delivered the judgment.

The co-accused in the murder case, Asish Sarangi, was sentenced to undergo rigorous imprisonment for three years and a fine of Rs 10,000. On default in paying the money, he will undergo imprisonment for nine more months. He has also been convicted of trying to project the murder of Singh as a death in a Maoist attack.

Both Sasanada and Asish were the personal security officers of the slain DIG.

Expressing her satisfaction over the judgment, Paramajit Kaur, widow of the slain police officer, said: “I am happy that the culprits have been brought to book. I, however, believe that life-long imprisonment should have been awarded to both of them.”

The accused persons’ advocate, S.N. Adhikari, however, said that Sasananda would file an appeal before the high court against the verdict of the Jeypore court.

“The judgment is contrary to law, facts and evidence of the case,” he said.
