Cuttack/Bhubaneswar, Sept. 21: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has called for an action taken report from the director-general of police (Odisha) on the violence during the Congress’s rally in Bhubaneswar on September 6.
More than 300 people, including 60 police personnel, were injured in the violence. Woman constable Pramila Padhi was severely injured when a mob assaulted her with sticks and stones on the Mahatma Gandhi Marg.
The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) today asked the DGP to submit the action taken report within four weeks. The NHRC sought the report in response to a complaint petition filed by high court advocate Nishikant Mishra.
The petitioner had sought departmental action against the police officials involved in the violence, when police fired tear gas shells and lathicharged the Congress activists.
The two-member team of the National Commission for Women (NCW), which had come to Odisha on a two-day tour to visit the constable and the family members of the Pipili gangrape victim, today met the chief secretary, secretary of the women and child welfare department and the director-general of police.
Talking to DGP Prakash Mishra, member of the NCW Charu Walikhanna said the family members of the woman who had been allegedly gang raped at Pipili in November last year and died this June, have been threatened by a former minister.
“The family members are very scared and need police protection. Besides, they are facing several other problems that the government must look into,” said Walikhanna.
The DGP also said the family members of the Pipili gang rape victim had never approached the police or brought the threat matter to their notice.
“We will talk to the family members and provide them with security if they want,” said Mishra.
The NCW member also discussed the problems faced by working women in their offices. The NCW will submit the report on the September 6 violence within 10 days.
