Day after, politics plays out loud

Efforts on to revoke poll ban

Bhubaneswar, Sept. 27: The death of Suman Sharma seems to have had no effect on major students’ organisations.

A day after the incident, the students’ outfits made last-ditch effort to force the authorities of Utkal University to hold this year’s union polls.

The authorities had on Saturday cancelled the elections owing to security reasons.

While Congress-backed NSUI and BJP’s student wing ABVP today started a signature campaign demanding the  revocation of the order, Biju Chhatra Janata Dal threatened a fast-unto-death protest.

Mud-slinging continued with outfits accusing each other of causing frequent unrest on the campus.
“Both NSUI and ABVP supporters have threatened university authorities into cancelling the polls. The authorities should not bow down to the pressure,” said presidential aspirant of Biju Chhatra Janata Dal Amit Kumar Jena.
On the other hand,

ABVP’s presidential candidate Anirudha Sahu said the BJD’s students’ wing did not want the polls fearing defeat.
“They know that they do not have any support on the campus. So, they put pressure on the authorities to cancel the polls,” he said.

The vice-chancellor and the chairman of the PG council today met deputy commissioner of police to apprise him of the situation.

“There is lack of security and we would urge the cops to take measures. Security of students is our priority,” said vice-chancellor Ashok Das.

University sources, however, said that chances of polls being held was slim as the decision was taken after PG council had unanimously agreed for cancellation.
