Bhubaneswar, Oct. 2: Dandiya nights are all set to be a crowd-puller, with residents gathering in the hundreds to enjoy Navratri amid song and dance at various events being hosted by organisations and hotels.
Over the years, the number of dandiya events hosted in Bhubaneswar are attracting people from a cross-section of society.
Prayas is hosting a five-day dandiya festival on the Exhibition Ground commencing on October 7.
Amid the beats of peppy chartbusters, the revellers will get to enjoy performing dandiya alongside celebrities. Live bands will be a major attraction and separate stages will be set up for children, adults and senior citizens.
A special couple award will be given each day while a Dandiya Queen will be selected on the concluding day. Also, Prayaas Samman will be presented to an eminent social activist for his or her contribution to society.
While at some places traditional garba tracks will take centre stage, at other locations disco dandiya is set to rule roost. DJ Parth, one of the most experienced disc jockeys of the city, shared his experience of playing on dandiya nights.
"The best thing about dandiya fests is the fact that they are inclusive. People of various age groups can come together and have fun. Shedding their inhibitions, people come together to showcase their dancing skills. It is a lot of fun and one can soak in the spirit of traditional rhythm," said the 24-year-old DJ.
Dandiya lovers also headed to Janata Maidan, where Odisha International Centre is organising Dandiya Mahotsav from today and there is no entry charge.
"One has to purchase sticks for a nominal cost of Rs 100 to Rs 150 a pair. We will also encourage people to donate to the army welfare fund," said Ranjit Mahapatra, a member of the festival organising committee. The fest that will continue till October 11 will have Odia food kiosks and handicrafts.
A number of star hotels will also host dandiya events. Mayfair Hotels and Resorts is organising Dandia Raas from October 1 to 11 with the organisers roping in celebrity singers from Voice of Odisha, Sare Gama Pa, Indian Idol and Voice of India to spice up the event.
The entry ticket has been priced at Rs 1,000 per adult and Rs 750 for children aged between six and 12. A carnival will also be hosted in the hotel arcade where various activities and competitions will be held.
"Odia film stars have been invited to interact with the crowd. Besides, mehendi and tattoo kiosks will also be put up," said Pradipta Mohapatra, general manager (sales and marketing) of Mayfair Hotels and Resorts.
