Gas from a leaking cylinder caught fire from an earthen lamp, lit as part of the ritual, in the room adjoining the kitchen, leading to the accident.

Patnaik's wife Anita, a lecturer of political science in Science College, Hinjilicut, and his elder sister Gouri Rani Mahanty suffered severe injuries. All the six were admitted to MKCG hospital. Anita and Gouri Rani were later shifted to Seven Hills Hospital in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh. The others were discharged after first-aid.

The impact of the explosion caused two walls in the kitchen to cave in. Doors of the first and second adjoining rooms and the glass panels of Patnaik's chamber were severely damaged and an iron grill near the staircase melted. Prasant, Suchismita, Pratikshya and Buni were sleeping and were injured by fire, broken glass and tiles, a family member said.
