Bhubaneswar, June 7: Chief district medical officer of Puri said the post mortem of the 12-year-old blind girl, whose body was recovered yesterday from a forest near Beladala village about 10km from Puri, revealed that she had been raped.
Earlier in the day, the State Commission for Women today sought an inquiry report from superintendent of police, Puri, in connection with the rape and murder of the girl.
“We have asked the Puri police chief to investigate the case and submit a report within a fortnight,” said Lopamudra Buxipatra, chairperson of the women’s commission.
Activists today visited the Beladala village and demanded a compensation of Rs 15 lakh for the deceased’s family. They also pressed for hearing of the case in a special fast track court for early judgment. Puri police chief Anup Kumar Sahu visited the victim’s village and recorded the statements of her family members and other residents. Police said two men were detained following the initial probe.
“We are interrogating the youths who are acquainted with the victim’s family,” a cop told The Telegraph.
The girl was a Class V student of a Bhubaneswar-based school for the blind. Her body was found in a cashew jungle along the Puri-Konark marine drive yesterday. The incident triggered angry protests from local residents, who blocked the marine drive route for several hours and burnt tyres yesterday, demanding immediate arrest of the culprits.
The father of the deceased said that his daughter had gone missing from home since Wednesday night.
He alleged that his daughter was first raped and then murdered.
The post-mortem was conducted last night and the police are awaiting the report. “Swab samples would be sent to the state forensic laboratory. Once we get the post-mortem report, we will be able to ascertain whether the victim was raped before being killed,” said Sahu.
