Bhubaneswar, Sept. 27: Three bombs were seized today from near the compound wall of a private school at Ram Mandir Square, 100 yards from Kharavela Nagar police station.

Police suspect that goons might have dumped the explosives on Thursday night.

Local residents spotted the explosives and informed the police the next morning. The cops immersed the bombs in water to diffuse them. The residents also informed the cops about some suspicious youths gathering around the school every evening.

“Fortunately, the bombs did not explode, or the consequence would have been worse as a number of students pass through the area,” said local resident Debakanta Sahoo.

The police suspect that such activities are taking place to disturb the students’ union polls. “We are investigating the matter,” said inspector in charge of Kharavela Nagar police station Nihar Ranjan Pradhan. Easy availability of country-made bombs has become a major concern for the police. On March 10, the police arrested six dacoits and seized a country-made pistol and 15 such bombs. The accused told the police that they had procured the explosives from Jatni.

Sources said country-made bombs were manufactured at Jatni and Pipili. “Goons prepare these explosives with gunpowder, nails and other articles,” said a police officer.

In another incident, a quick action team, along with Lakshmisagar police, today arrested two goons and seized a pistol and two rounds of bullets from them. The arrested are Pramod Kumar Jena, 25 and Niranjan Naik, 20.
