Crores traced in vigilance raids

Vigilance sleuths on Wednesday raided two government officials on charges of amassing disproportionate assets.

Bhubaneswar: Vigilance sleuths on Wednesday raided two government officials on charges of amassing disproportionate assets.

The sleuths traced properties worth Rs 1.30 crore from the regional transport officer (RTO), Balasore, Amaresh Patra and his family members, and properties worth Rs 1.55 crore from Prasanta Kumar Sahoo, Buguda forest range officer in Ganjam district.

Simultaneous raids were conducted at nine places, including Patra's home at Bidanasi in Cuttack and his offices.

The sleuths found Rs 15.17 lakh in different bank accounts and insurance deposits. Gold ornaments weighing 628gms worth Rs 15.75 lakh and household articles worth Rs 12.20 lakh were also traced. The sleuths found a bus in the name of Patra's wife worth Rs 14 lakh and a Maruti Brezza worth Rs 11.20 lakh.

Raids at four places, including the Sahoo's Bhanjanagar home and his offices revealed bank deposits worth Rs 45.05 lakh and insurance investments of Rs 6.09 lakh. A Scorpio worth Rs 10.55 lakh was also found, while his three storey building at Bhanjanagar is worth Rs 68.82 lakh.

"The searches were conducted on the basis of a court warrant and further investigation in both the cases is ongoing. We are ascertaining the income of the officials to ascertain the gap between the cost of assets and actual income," said a vigilance official.
