Bhubaneswar: A 34-year-old farmer, who allegedly consumed poison to end his life to get rid of frustration caused by crop loss in Bargarh on Sunday, died on Wednesday.
The farmer died few hours after the state government announced a package for farmers facing crop loss due to the prevailing drought situation in the state.
The victim, Indra Bariha of Malamanda village in Bargarh, had been undergoing treatment at district headquarters hospital since Monday. The village of the farmer falls in the Bijepur Assembly seat, which is set for a bypoll.
His family members alleged that financial burden had forced him to end his life. "He had borrowed Rs 1 lakh for growing paddy on five acres. But, the crop was damaged due to less rainfall - which left him distressed," said a family member.
Though the district administration officials admitted crop loss in the area due to less rainfall, they refused to believe that Bariha ended his life for the same reason. District officials also claimed that they did not get any evidence of Bariha taking any loan.
On Thursday, a sum of Rs 10,000 was given to Bariha's family members from the Red Cross Fund, while another Rs 2,000 was given from the Harischandra Yojna to conduct his last rites.
Agriculture minister Damodar Rout has sought a detailed report from the district administration over the incident. "The Bargarh main canal is the main source of irrigation in the area and the canal has the capacity to store maximum water. So, I have asked for a detailed probe to ascertain the cause of death of the farmer," he said.
The government on Wednesday announced that agriculture input subsidy would be provided to the small and marginal farmers, who had suffered crop loss of 33 per cent and above at Rs 6,800 per hectare in rain-fed or non-irrigated areas as well as Rs 13,500 per hectare in areas under assured irrigation.
