Jajpur: A farmer has allegedly committed suicide in the district's Bari block as he feared crop loss due to likely rain following low pressure.

The farmer has been identified as Suresh Chandra Sahoo, 50, of Sundarpur village in Madhusudanpur gram panchayat within Binjharpur police limits in the district.

Suresh was found hanging from a tree in the backyard of his house early on Tuesday morning.

"My son had cultivated paddy crop in six acres and already suffered a lot due to crop loss caused by untimely rain last month. The remaining paddy crops are ready for harvest. He took the extreme step on late Monday night after anticipating crop loss due to heavy rain that is likely to lash the state for at least three days from December 7," said Narayan Sahoo, father of Suresh.

Family sources said Suresh, a father of three, was working as a plumber in a private company in Calcutta. He left the job and came home two years ago. Last year, he had started cultivation at the village.

"My son had grown paddy crops in six acres. We have only two acres of ancestral farmland. But, he had cultivated four more acres as a share cropper," he said.

Local activists of the Nabanirman Krushak Sena reached the house of the deceased farmer and expressed their condolences.

Jajpur collector Ranjan Kumar Das said the exact reason behind the step taken by Suresh would be ascertained only after a thorough inquiry. He said the revenue officials were asked to inquire into the incident.

Binjharpur police station inspector-in-charge Asit Kumar Mohanty said they had seized the body and registered an unnatural death case in this connection.

Further investigation is on, said the police.
