Cuttack, Aug. 6: A 26-year-old engineer undergoing training with a private company was arrested by crime branch sleuths for allegedly misusing the credit card of a girl.
The accused had allegedly hacked a website and secured details of the credit card of the girl and made online payments worth Rs 1.25 lakh. He has been identified as Saroj Kumar Tripathy of Tulasipur and was arrested from Bangalore, where he was undergoing training.
Police said Tripathy, who had secured his degree in communication and technology from a reputed college in Cuttack, had spent around Rs 80,000 to Rs 90,000 on the credit card by visiting online porn chat websites.
Terming the cyber fraud as “identity theft”, additional director-general (crime branch) B.K. Sharma said Tripathy somehow managed to gain glean the girl’s the credit card number and used it for various online transactions.
“As the credit card does not require passwords nor does it have facility such as text message alerts in case of debit transactions, it is easier to misuse a credit card for online shopping and other transactions,” said Sharma.
Tripathy had allegedly made the transactions last June. After getting to know that her credit card was being used by someone else, the girl had lodged a complaint with the police on July 2.
A case under Section 66 (c) and (d) of the Information Technology (Amendment) Act, 2008, was registered and efforts were made to find the identity of the criminal.
Based on tower locations and other transaction details, the police got details about Tripathy. It seemed that he got to know that the police were on his trail and left for Bangalore.
