Cuttack: Special vigilance courts on Tuesday sentenced an engineer to imprisonment in a disproportionate assets case, while ordering confiscation of property of an Odisha Administrative Officer in another.

While the court in Cuttack passed the final order for confiscating the properties of Rudra Prasanna Sahoo who is facing trial in a disproportionate case registered nearly nine years ago, the another in Bhubaneswar sentenced Jibesh Chandra Rath to three years imprisonment following conviction in a similar case registered 11 years ago.

Rath's residential house along with those of his relatives was searched when he was an assistant engineer at the office of engineer-in-chief (civil) in Bhubaneswar in March 2007. Subsequently, charge sheet was submitted against him and his spouse after prima facie evidence showed possession of assets disproportionate to their known sources of income.

The Bhubaneswar court convicted both the couple in the case and awarded jail term, along with a fine of Rs 10,000.

In the case of Sahoo, his residential house and native place at Angul, residences of his relative at Banamalipur in.Khordha and his official accommodation at Phulbani town were searched in August 2009 when he was additional sub-collector (Kandhamal).

After completion of investigation, a charge sheet was submitted against him and his spouse for possession of disproportionate assets and charges were framed in May 2017. While trial was in progress, confiscation proceedings were moved.

The Cuttack court ordered confiscation of Sahoo's movable and immovable properties worth Rs 45,42,906. The properties included a triple-storeyed building, land measuring 5.55 acres in Angul town, one MIG plot at Kalinga Vihar, Bhubaneswar and other movable properties including gold ornaments, a Vigilance (Coordination) official said.
