Cops nab loot gang kingpin

Bhubaneswar, June 21: Police nabbed a 29-year-old person this evening for looting Rs 11 lakh on June 5.

The accused, Anil Kumar Das, who had opened fire at police on Infocity-Nandankanan Road, has suffered bullet injuries in his right leg and is undergoing treatment at SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack. He was the kingpin of the robbers’ gang.

On the basis of the information provided by Das, the police arrested five others, including a security guard, from various parts of the city and recovered Rs 3.99 lakh in cash and seized two pistols from their possession.

Five of the six accused persons were known history sheeters. On June 5, they had looted the cash from the cashier of a private hospital after firing at his car on a busy road near Jayadev Vatika. The security guard, who was posted at the private hospital, had passed on the information to the goons about the timing of money transportation on the day of incident.

The police said that Anil and one of his associates were coming in two motorcycles. When they saw a barricading by the police, his associate took a u-turn and managed to escape. Anil, however, fell down from his two-wheeler during the chase by the police. He fired three rounds at the police in a bid to flee. The police retaliated and one of the bullets hit him on his right leg.

Other arrested persons were Charan Das, 23, of Cuttack, Tulu Sahoo, 33, of Khurda, Manas Kumar Das, 28, Goutam Bhoi, 25, of Cuttack and Loknath Dash, 19, of Cuttack. The accused persons are said to be involved in a number of robbery cases in Khurda, Cuttack and Jagatsinghpur. The police said that Manas was involved in 22 crimes, while Tulu, Charan and Manas had seven cases pending against each of them. Anil was involved in eight cases.
