Cops nab 11 gamblers

Kalinga Nagar police on Sunday busted a gambling racket in the industrial complex area with the arresting of 11 people.

Jajpur: Kalinga Nagar police on Sunday busted a gambling racket in the industrial complex area with the arresting of 11 people.

The cops also seized Rs 8,350 in cash and 18 motorycles during a raid.

Acting on a tip-off, the cops raided the gambling den at Birsa Munda Colony in Kalinga Nagar. The police said the accused were all local residents. They were produced in a local court on Monday and remanded to judicial custody.

The arrested 11 are Rinku Mohanty of Jhumpan, Bagun Hanhaga of Chandia, Madan Soy of Bamiagotha, Bishnu Mohanty of Kumbhar Salia, Dusmanta Kumar Mohanty of Gobarghati Colony, Madhav Kumar Mallik of Olia, Sama Mohanty of Nuagaon, Ramakanta Dehury of Jamupasi, Amar Singh Tamsai of Jhari Nuagaon, Rabindra Mohanta and Babuli Sahu of Mahibar village, the police said.

"On being informed, we raided the area and caught 11 persons red-handed. We also seized Rs 8,350 in cash and 18 motorcycles," said Rajendra Narayan Panda, inspector in charge of Kalinga Nagar police station.

He said some others, however, managed to escape during raids. The cops are now verifying the antecedents of the arrested.

"We are also trying to locate the other members," Panda said.

The cops had earlier busted two such rackets and made several arrests from the local weekly market as part of its plans to make the Kalinga Nagar Industrial Complex a gambling-free zone.

"We will intensify our intelligence mechanism in many residential colonies and weekly and bi-weekly markets in the industrial complex area. Besides, we will also sensitise local venders," he said.

Large-scale gambling is reported from various residential colonies and the local markets. Residents have demanded crackdowns and night patrols to curb the practice.
