Bhubaneswar, Sept. 8: Police today handed over the body of gynaecologist Sweta Padma Mishra, who had allegedly jumped to death from the terrace of her eight-storey apartment at Saheed Nagar on Sunday, to her husband Arijit Mohapatra, a paediatrician, thus bringing the tug of war between the two families to an end.

Yesterday, the police kept the body at the Capital Hospital morgue after the Mohapatras and the Mishras locked horns over its possession. This morning, both the families reached the hospital to claim the body.

"The couple had been married for the past 16 years, and Arijit has the legal rights of performing her last rites," said a police official.

In another development, the deceased's siblings have arrived in the city from the US.

Moreover, the police today seized documents related to Sweta's treatment at a private hospital here.

While Sweta's in-laws and colleagues said she was being treated for schizophrenia, her parents denied it. They had raised allegations of dowry torture against her husband.

"The medical documents seized from her apartment revealed that she was diagnosed with adverse reaction to neuro-behavioural symptoms (related to psychiatric problem) in 2011 and had been under treatment since then," said a police official.

The police today also went through the apartment's CCTV footage, which showed Sweta landing on the eighth floor of the apartment at 1.31pm on Sunday from her third-floor flat by the lift.

Later, she took the staircase to reach the terrace and allegedly jumped from there.

"So far, we have not found any foul play in our investigation. A case of unnatural death has been registered in this connection, and further investigation is on," said police commissioner R.P. Sharma.

Sweta, mother of a 12-year-old boy, was employed at a private hospital near Rupali Square at Saheed Nagar.

Her husband, who also works at the same hospital, was not at home when the incident happened.
