Cuttack: Police have registered a case against one more person in the firing case involving an attempt to murder allegedly conspired by Sushant Dhal Samant, the elder of the dreaded gangster siblings from inside Bhubaneswar's Jharpada jail.

"The case against Ashis Kumar Behera was registered at the Sadar police station," assistant public prosecutor Biswajit Baral said.

"Accordingly, police sought permission of the court of judicial magistrate first class, Cuttack, to implicate Ashis Kumar Behera, 32, in the firing case, which the court allowed on Tuesday," Baral said.

Ashis was allegedly a principal associate and sharpshooter of the gangster duo.

On February 23, criminal Mrutyunjaya Nayak alias Miku, three days after his release from Jharpada jail, had fired at one Bijay Kumar Pal at his house at Subhadrapur.

Miku was arrested on March 3 evening. Subsequently, Cuttack Municipal Corporation's BJD councillor Ranjita Biswal was arrested on March 6 for abetting the crime along with Sarat Behera.

Later on March 9, a case was registered against Sushant for conspiring the firing from inside the jail.

The police said investigations indicated that the accused Ranjita Biswal and Sarat Behera facilitated the crime by arranging and handing over a packet of firearms to Miku. But the police are yet to zero down on the source of the firearms Ranjita had allegedly passed on to Miku.

Sources said Behera's arrest from Golden Park Hotel on Cuttack-Paradip road on March 15 happened after the police grilled Sushant and Ranjita. He was absconding since the arrest of the gangster siblings in January 2016.

Police suspect Behera, who is now in Choudwar jail, to be the source of the firearms. Sources said the police might seek his remand for interrogation. Ashis was wanted in connection with nine cases at Chauliaganj, two cases at Lalbag and another at Bidanasi police stations for murder, attempt to murder, possession of illegal firearms and other criminal offences.
