Bhubaneswar, Sept. 18: Police are looking for a broker, who had allegedly helped four suspected Bangladeshi nationals to apply for passports at the regional passport office in the city on the basis of forged documents.
The passport office today handed over the four suspected foreigners to the police.
Officials scrutinising their passport documents had called the four persons to verify their papers.
“Though they had given voter identity cards bearing Odia names with their addresses belonging to Khurda district, they were not able to speak a word in Odia. That led us to have suspicion,” said an official.
Further investigation by the police revealed that the four applicants — in the age 25 to 30 — belonged to Bangladesh. They wanted the passports to go to Saudi Arab.
A broker in Calcutta had prepared forged documents and brought them to Bhubaneswar.
The middleman disappeared from the scene before the police could reach the spot.
“We have detained four persons and are interrogating them. We will write to the Bangladesh High Commission to ascertain their identities,” said deputy commissioner of police Satyabrata Bhoi.
In July last, the police had arrested Nirakar Ojha of Berhampur and Kaluram Moharana of Kendrapara for submitting forged matriculation certificates while applying for passports.
Further investigation had revealed that both of them had got the fake certificates from an agent by giving Rs 2,500 each.
