Bhubaneswar, April 23: A week after Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited the famous Lingaraj temple in the city and shared the pictures of the temple on his Twitter handle, a video containing a scuffle between a police constable and servitors near the temple's sanctum sanctorum went viral in social networking sites today.
The servitors of the temple today alleged that a police constable deployed near its sanctum sanctorum passed lewd remarks at them yesterday. The servitors also alleged that the police constable showed an "indecent gesture" at them following a brawl between them over entry of a devotee.
"The constable tried to stop me from taking a devotee to the temple. When I asked the reason, he got infuriated and started scolding me. Later, other servitors came to my rescue. But, they were also abused by the constable," said the servitor.
Secretary of Brahman Nijog Biranchi Narayan Pati also alleged the constable of committing similar offences in the recent past.
"He abused many devotees in the recent past as well. The way he abused our servitors was not acceptable. Exemplary actions should be taken against him," he demanded.
The constable was posted at the temple six months ago.
The temple authorities have not lodged any formal complaint.
"We have started an enquiry from our side. The closed-circuit television camera footage of the temple will be analysed to ascertain the circumstances leading to the incident," said deputy commissioner of police Satyabrata Bhoi.
