Berhampur: The Berhampur University's convocation, which was scheduled to be held on February 6, has been postponed.

The 22nd edition of the event would be held on a date later, according to the chancellor's convenience. The decision was taken by the syndicate on Tuesday. The syndicate decided to request governor-cum-chancellor S.C. Jam-ir to attend the convocation and intimate a date of his convenience, said postgraduate council chairman Debi Pras-anna Patnaik.

Earlier, the chancellor's office had said that the governor would not be able to attend the convocation on February 6.

Though the convocation was approaching, the invitation card was yet to be printed. It is for the first time in the history of this university that any chancellor has expressed his unwillingness to attend a convocation ceremony.

University sources said the chancellor dropped the name of the Nalco chairman-cum-managing director Tapan Chand from the DLiit recipient list, which had been sent to him for final approval earlier.

The university's syndicate had proposed the name of litterateur Ramakanta Rath, fo-under of KIIT University Ach-yut Samant and Chand for the DLitt. CPM state general secretary Ali Kishore Patnaik, Ganjam Bar Association secretary Pitabas Panda, AIDSO state vice-president Somnath Behera and many others had expressed their dissatisfaction over selection of the recipient of DLitt by the Berhampur University earlier. "Selection process for the DLitt was a complete foul play," a political leader alleged.
