Vigilance courts across the state have notched five convictions within 20 days following trial of public servants in corruption cases.

Cuttack: Vigilance courts across the state have notched five convictions within 20 days following trial of public servants in corruption cases.

On January 5, vigilance court in Baripada convicted Dr Trailokya Chandra Mohanta and sentenced him to rigorous imprisonment for three years and imposed fine of Rs 4 lakh in a disproportionate assets cases.

Mohanta, who was the then medical officer in charge of Basudevpur public health centre in Keonjhar, was now medical officer of Khunta public health centre in Mayurbhanj.

On December 27, vigilance court in Bhubaneswar convicted Santosh Kumar Das, a retired Odisha Administrative Officer, and sentenced him to two years rigorous imprisonment and fine of Rs 50,000 for possession of disproportionate assets.

Vigilance court in Baripada convicted Ratnakar Panda, a retired sub-inspector in the excise department, on December 22 and sentenced him to three years rigorous imprisonment along with fine of Rs 5 lakh for possession of disproportionate assets. The case had been registered against him 14 years ago.

On December 21, vigilance court at Phulbani convicted Mahadev Khatai, junior engineer of the roads and buildings (Baliguda), and sentenced him to rigorous imprisonment for two years along with fine of Rs 3,000 for demanding illegal gratification. The case had been registered against him 10 years ago.

In another case of demanding illegal gratification, vigilance court in Balasore convicted Jasen Murmu, a contractual junior engineer, on December 19 and sentenced him to two years rigorous imprisonment and imposed fine of Rs 10,000.

The case had been registered against him seven years ago for demand and acceptance of illegal gratification of Rs 5,000 for preparation of bill related to execution of a cement concrete road executed by him when he was working at the block development office at Bhogarai.
